CommuteBase Hangar & Ops

Crashpads near the hangar and the ops center.

For aircraft mechanics and AMTs (airline, MRO, and contract) and for dispatchers and ops staff. Where the maintenance bases and ops centers are, how commuting really works on probation, and crashpads tagged for night shifts and long stays.

Commuting tips

What's different for mechanics and dispatchers

All sourced. Reddit items are individual anecdotes, not statistics.

Station locks

  • Delta mechanics report a 2-year station lock, and 3 years at hard-to-fill MSP, LAX, and JFK (r/AircraftMechanics).
  • SkyWest pays a $10,000 location bonus for a 3-year commitment at ORD, MKE, or SLC (SkyWest A&P guide).
  • Seniority usually carries over between stations at the same airline, but not between airlines (r/aviationmaintenance).

The probation reality

  • Mechanics generally lack the commuter protections pilots and FAs have. Missing a shift because of a full flight is treated as a no-show, and mechanics have been fired while on probation (r/AircraftMechanics).
  • Unlike flight crew, you stay in base for the whole work block, so plan on a room for the week, not a night (r/AircraftMechanics).
  • One long-term commuter's rules: rent a room, keep a car there, fly direct, have a home airport with 3+ daily flights, and be home at least half your days (r/AircraftMechanics).
  • Day-trades and compressed schedules (doubles, week-on/week-off) cut nights in base (r/aviationmaintenance).

Getting there: non-rev and jumpseat

  • Airline mechanics get standard non-rev standby travel. Cockpit jumpseat access for off-duty mechanics is set by each carrier under 14 CFR 121.547; most commuting mechanics rely on standby Inference.
  • New hires usually start on nights (mid shifts); getting off nights can take years at majors (r/aviationmaintenance).

Dispatcher jumpseat notes

  • Part 121 dispatchers need 5 hours of operating familiarization a year (14 CFR 121.463), which makes them jumpseat-eligible; most Part 121 shops participate in CASS.
  • A passport is required.
  • No Known Crewmember access: regular TSA screening with a gate pass.
  • Gate agents often don't know dispatchers can ride up front (r/FlightDispatch).
  • Dispatchers have no commuting protection if they show up late, so plan to fly in the day before (r/FlightDispatch).
  • New dispatchers usually start on relief, early-AM, or midnight lines; 4-on/3-off is common at regionals (r/FlightDispatch).

Contract work and per diem

  • Contract pay is usually a taxable hourly rate plus tax-free per diem. Per diem generally requires a tax home commonly 50–55+ miles from the job and an assignment under 1 year (r/aviationmaintenance, IRS Topic 511, IRS Rev. Rul. 99-7). Buying a house near the job ends eligibility. Not tax advice.
  • Typical assignments run 3–6 months, sometimes longer.
  • Contractors start with Furnished Finder, then Airbnb monthly stays, extended-stay hotels, and Facebook roommate groups (r/AircraftMechanics). RVs and travel trailers are common; the issue is where to park (r/aviationmaintenance).
  • Many crashpads cap stays at 5–6 nights and ban using the crashpad as a residence (These Gold Wings). Filter for weekly, monthly, or 30+ nights.

How Hangar & Ops crashpads are tagged

Crashpads here are separate from CommuteBase crew listings and carry their own tags:

Plus housing (men only, women only, co-ed) and the attributes shift workers ask for: Day-sleeper friendlyStay: nightly / weekly / monthly / 30+ nightsPrivate roomTruck/RV parkingDrive time to hangar / ops centerTime to terminal

A garage or storage spot for a toolbox is on our list too: SkyWest, for one, requires mechanics to bring a personal toolset (SkyWest A&P guide).
